I was born, raised and now practice full-scope optometry in Tacoma, WA. My undergraduate studies began at Brigham Young University. I received my Doctor of Optometry degree in 1980, from Pacific University College of Optometry, in Forest Grove, OR. I opened the doors of my private optometry practice immediately following a yearlong residency at the American Lake Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lakewood,WA.
My early exposure to Low Vision rehabilitation began during a clinical rotation at the Washington State School for the Blind in Vancouver, WA. I continued my education and hands on experience in low vision care during my residency in Rehabilitative Optometry, and have continued this work during more than 33 years in private practice.
I have lectured extensively on the subjects of vision, visual impairments and their treatments to many audiences, including the Tacoma School District, Macular Degeneration Association, Tacoma Area Coalition of Individuals with Disabilities, Washington State Services for the Blind, Optometric Physicians of Washington, Washington Association of Eye Physicians, and the Pacific Northwest Association of Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired.
Since 2002, I have been the Washington State Clinical Director for the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes screening program. Every year my wife, Tracie, and I organize a vision screening program for Special Olympics athletes attending the Washington State Summer Games at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Along with students from Pacific University College of Optometry, local Lions Club members and local optometrists, we provide a thorough screening and often provide new eyeglasses the same day of the screening. Over the years we have screened nearly 3000 athletes!
My wife, Tracie, (my office manager, see below) and I have four wonderful children and four beautiful granddaughters.
I am originally from Utah, but fell in love with the Northwest while attending school in Oregon at Pacific University College of Optometry. I completed my undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University with a degree in Italian. I graduated from Pacific after completing clinical rotations in specialty contact lenses, ocular disease, and low vision care. While studying at Pacific, I also worked as a clinical interpreter for Spanish speaking patients.
I have been focused mainly on the primary care of eye diseases, eyeglasses, and contact lens fitting. But I also have experience in pediatric eye care, pre- and post- operative care, glaucoma treatment, and low vision rehabilitation. My goal is to provide the best possible eye care to a wide variety of ages and backgrounds. I am a member of the American Optometric Association and the Optometric Physicians of Washington.
In my 'spare time' I enjoy cooking, sports, spending time outdoors, and especially spending time with my family. My wife, Anna, and I are the proud parents of two little girls and a new baby boy.
The healthcare field has been an important part of my life since I was 14, when I began working in my Dad's chiropractic office. I have been in the optical field for 34 years and have loved every minute of it! As office manager, my goal is to have every patient walk out of our office happy, and loving their new glasses or contacts! We have a wonderful and caring staff who only want the best for our patients. We have the best patients around!!
I am a technician for Family EyeCare and have been in the medical field for 20+ yrs. The best part of my job is meeting all of our wonderful patients and getting to know you and your families. It’s great to see the children come back each year and see the changes. I feel privileged to help serve all of you. It has been great to be a part of such a family friendly office where we can get silly and get paid for it too!
I recently joined this amazing team at Family EyeCare Associates and very quickly realized that whether you’re a member of the staff or one of the many, happy patients that walk through the door, you truly are treated like family. My job here (if you can call it that – I love what I do!) is working in the back office figuring out how to help you get the maximum benefit from your insurance coverage. It can be a frustrating task, but also quite a victory when we finally obtain the coverage you have been paying for. I have been in the eyecare field for 7+ years, and am familiar with most eyecare related insurance companies. And, while you may not see my face at each appointment, know that I am working behind the scenes to help make your patient experience a great one!
In my free time I enjoy reading, cooking, jet skiing, camping, spending time with friends & family and cheering on the Seahawks! Go Hawks!
I've been in the Eye Care field for 20+ years. I've worked both in Ophthalmology as a tech and Optometry as an Optician. I'm able to educate patients in eye health while providing them with the proper eyewear for their individual needs. My job as an Optician is very rewarding. I love to see the joy on patient's faces as they put on their new glasses!
When I'm not at work I'm busy with family and friends. I enjoy cycling, long walks, camping, hiking, a good book and movies. Along with some football or baseball. Go Seahawks!!! Go Mariners!!
I have worked in health care for over 15 years. One day I went in for my annual eye exam and came out with a job. That was 10 years ago. I fell in love with optical with that first job. What I love the most is working with contact lenses and children's exams. I am completely blessed to be working for the Hartman's and with Dr. Garlick. It is true, we have the best patients. Everyday is fun and it doesn't seem like “work”. I could not ask for more! In my downtime I am the NW Director for a non profit dog rescue group and a huge Seattle Sounders fan.
I have been in the optical business for many years. As a dispensing optician I pride myself in being able to make you 'look as good as you see', by helping you select the eyewear that will complement both your prescription and your face! I have enjoyed my time here at Family EyeCare Associates and hope to get to know our patients and establish relationships with you that will last for years!
