Payment Options

At Family EyeCare Associates in Tacoma, our goal is to promote good eye health and enable you to have the clearest vision possible. We accept several types of vision insurance, cash, checks, and most credit cards. We inform our patients about exam and treatment costs at the beginning of your appointment. If you require a breakdown of costs, please let us know.

Vision Insurance

The knowledgeable staff at Family EyeCare Associates is experienced in working with vision insurance providers. We will work directly with you and your vision insurer to submit claims regarding your vision care. We strive to ensure that you understand your insurance coverage and will answer any questions you may have regarding your benefits. Many current vision plans are designed to cover most of the basic vision-related costs, but not all costs associated with eye care. Most plans often require a co-payment for an office appointment as well as additional costs that are covered by the insured patient.

We Probably Accept Your Vision and Health Insurance Plans

There are two types of health insurance that may help pay for the eye care services and/or eyewear you receive from our office:

    1) VISION:  Davis, VSP, NBN, etc.

    2) MEDICAL:  Regence, Medicare, Premera, First Choice, United Healthcare, etc.

You may have both types of insurance.  Family EyeCare Associates accepts the insurance plans listed above and many others in both categories.

Vision plans cover routine (usually annual) vision wellness exams, along with eyeglasses and contact lenses. Near-sightedness, Far-sightedness, Astigmatism and Presbyopia are examples of what these insurance plans label as ‘routine’ diagnoses.

Medical insurance must be used for medical eye care. It usually covers the diagnosis, management and treatment of eye health problems. Conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, red eyes and other non-routine conditions are covered by medical insurance. Office visits for these conditions occur whenever the need arises, outside of your annual routine exam.
If you have both types of insurance plans it may be necessary for us to bill some services to one plan and some services to the other. We will follow a procedure called ‘coordination of benefits’ to maximize your insurance benefits and minimize your out-of-pocket expenses.
If some fees are not paid by your insurance, such as deductibles, co-pays or non-covered services or products (as allowed by the insurance contract), you will be billed by our office and will be responsible for the remaining balance. 

Provide your insurance cards to our office staff so we can make copies for your file. Even if you are coming in for a routine exam, we would like to have your medical insurance or Medicare card on file so that we can efficiently bill your medical insurance in the future. 

To make it easier for our patients to pay for their eye exams and materials, our office accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.  If you need to extend your payments Care Credit is also available through our office.

HSAs (Health Savings Accounts) and FSAs (Flexible Spending Accounts)

Many employers are offering Health Savings Account and Flexible Spending Account options to employees. Sometimes these are referred to as cafeteria plans and are elective, supplemental insurance savings plans. These plans are designed to let you save money in an account, pre-tax, to pay for additional medical expenses such as eye exams, glasses, contacts, and often laser vision surgery. Check with the benefits administrator at your work to see if you are eligible for this program. FSAs can typically be used in conjunction with any vision insurance plan to offset any out-of-pocket costs on your behalf.

Other Payment Options

Our Tacoma optometry staff understands that cost is a concern when evaluating vision care providers. We do not want cost to be an obstacle to maintaining proper eye health and good vision. We accept various forms of payment and are able to discuss financing options with you prior to any examination. At Family EyeCare Associates, we also accept cash, check, and major credit cards.
